JOB SUMMARY:

Operate backhoe for installation, repairs and replacement of watermains, water services valve chambers, sewer pipes, hydrants and manholes. Load trucks with excavated materials, backfill, hydrants, water pipes and valves. Place and remove steel road plates over excavations as needed. Attach and detach accessory pieces of equipment such as digging buckets and ram. Perform preventative maintenance and minor repairs. Perform truck driving, labouring duties and other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS & REQUIREMENTS:

Previous demonstrated experience operating a backhoe for the utility industry in an urban environment.

Previous experience working in the water industry an asset.

Able to understand and follow verbal and written detailed procedures in performing trade or craft type work. Able to use fractions, decimal arithmetic, and simple formulas. Must be able to interpret diagrams and drawings.

Able to operate hydraulic backhoe machine in a safe manner and be familiar with the Health and Safety Act.

Demonstrated ability to operate tools and equipment such as boring machines, gophers, tapping machines, compressors, jack hammers, pipe cutters and pumps.

Requires “DZ” license, “AZ” license preferred.

Must be able to operate hydraulic accessory attachments such as breakers and packers.

NOTE 1: Must possess a point-free driving record and/or record found to be satisfactory to the City of Hamilton.

NOTE 2: Must be willing to work shift work.
