Visual Communications Summer Student (Development Services) Job Number : 28447

  • 1 temporary full-time position for 4 months, commencing in May 2017, intended specifically for students currently attending a post-secondary institution in a marketing, graphic design, visual communications, communications, public relations or related post-secondary degree program and returning to school full-time in Fall 2017.

    The Development Services Branch of the Sustainable Development Department is looking for a motivated, energetic and self-starting marketing professional, with an emphasis on graphic design and visual communication, to join the Marketing and Client Relations team.

    Development Services leads land development approvals, development and building permits, and business and vehicle-for-hire licensing. Clients include the development industry, internal employees, businesses, residents and communities, among others.

    As a Visual Communications Summer Student, you will assist with the creative development and implementation of marketing strategies and programs to enhance the client experience. The successful candidate will bring strong graphic design/visual communication experience to educate, empower, and encourage collaboration for all lines of business in the Branch.

    Reporting to the Marketing & Client Relations Manager, Business Strategy & Operations, you ensure the transparent, timely, and effective delivery of Branch services by:

    • Assisting with writing, design, production, and distribution of all print materials, design collateral and presentations to City Council, ensuring adherence to City brand guidelines
    • Engaging with stakeholder groups and representatives, such as builders, developers, residents, and community leagues to assess their needs while building and maintaining strong working relationships
    • Compiling information and editing/designing newsletters and Google Sites on behalf of the Branch
    • Leading projects by managing resources and timelines and working effectively with multiple internal and external stakeholders
    • Coordinating outsourcing of writing, design, photography, and videography, as needed, for print and web materials as required
    • Ensuring the voice of the Branch is represented appropriately in marketing and digital media initiatives
    • Conducting research to support various marketing campaigns
    • Scheduling and managing project meetings and support the Business Strategy & Operations team, as required

    • Currently attending and returning full-time in fall 2017 to a marketing, graphic design, visual communications, communications, public relations, or related post-secondary degree program
    • Demonstrated knowledge of marketing, graphic design/visual communication, public relations, web, and social media practices and principles
    • Effective verbal and written communication skills and ability to maintain strong working relationships
    • Demonstrated ability using Microsoft Office Suite, Google Apps and Adobe Creative Suite/Cloud
    • Ability to problem solve and develop creative solutions
    • Ability to embody the “We are one city” Leadership Principle through experience working as a part of a team
    • Excellent organizational and multitasking skills
    • Demonstrated ability to conduct research and analysis with proven attention to detail
    • Ability to work and make decisions in an independent manner in a fast-paced environment
    • Previous experience working with brand standards and delivering on brand strategy is an asset
    • Video editing and production experience is an asset

    This position may be partially funded through the Alberta Government Summer Temporary Employment Program (STEP).

    Hours of Work: 40 hours per week, Monday – Friday

    Salary Range : $18.984 – $24.161 (Hourly).
