Human Resources Summer Student (Labour Relations) Job Number : 28487

  • 1 temporary full-time position for 4 months, commencing in May 2017, intended specifically for students currently attending a post-secondary institution in a Human Resources or related degree program and returning to school full-time in the fall of 2017.

    Labour Relations (LR) is an internal service provided to the City of Edmonton offering advice to management on the most appropriate manner in which to deal with human resource issues, support in the bargaining, interpretation and administration of collective agreements and the resolution of grievances pursuant to the respective collective agreement. LR also offers dispute resolution, alternative dispute resolution, arbitration, and supervisor coaching and staff development services and advice.

    Responsibilities include:

    • Support attendance management through gathering and analyzing data, identifying issues and trends and making recommendations to the LR Consultant (LRC) in support of operations clients
    • Help draft Standard Operating Procedures for the LR Section
    • Read and summarize City arbitration decisions
    • Provide support to LRCs who are conducting investigations and handling grievances
    • Assist the LRC with drafting correspondence to employees (coaching, confirming performance and conduct expectations, discipline)
    • Review and analyze organizational data and information, looking for trends, challenges and/or concerns
    • Other related duties as required

    Qualifications
    :

    • Currently attending and returning full-time in Fall 2017 to a Human Resources or related post-secondary degree program
    • Demonstrated ability using Microsoft Office Suite and Google Apps
    • Effective verbal and written communication skills and ability to maintain strong working relationships
    • Excellent organizational and multi-tasking skills
    • Ability to embody the “We are one city” Leadership Principle through experience working as a part of a team
    • Demonstrated ability to be flexible and innovative
    • Experience using PeopleSoft is an asset

    This position may be partially funded through the Alberta Government Summer Temporary Employment Program (STEP).

    Hours of Work: 40 hours per week, Monday – Friday

    Salary Range : $18.984 – $24.161 (Hourly).
