Building Safety Codes Officer II

As a Building Safety Codes Officer II, you will lead and mentor a group of Safety Codes Officers working towards ensuring the safety of buildings, citizens, and families. You will make a difference every day:

  • Provide consultation to contractors, engineers, and customers for clarification of the Safety Codes Act and/or Alberta Building Code
  • Examine plans to ensure compliance with the Alberta Building Code and other related documents
  • Make critical decisions on difficult interpretations of the Alberta Building Code
  • Answer inquires relating to building construction requirements related to permits and fees
  • Respond to inquiries from Councilors, Managers, and the general public
  • Research (on an ongoing basis) all materials within the field and provide this information to customers, Safety Code Officers, and fellow employees within the Branch
  • Represent the Branch at meetings involving other Civic Departments and external agencies

Qualifications
:

  • Completed Diploma in Building Construction Engineering Technology with a minimum 3 years in a supervisory capacity in the construction of commercial and residential buildings; OR
  • Recognized Journeyman in the trade of Carpentry and a minimum of 5 years Journeyman experience including 3 years in a supervisory capacity in the construction of commercial and residential buildings
  • Minimum of 5 years experience as a Building Safety Codes Officer in plan examination and/or field inspection
  • Registered as a Safety Codes Officer having Building Level 3 Group A in the Province of Alberta
  • Thorough knowledge of the Alberta Building Code and related regulations
  • Ability to interpret and enforce regulations impartially and tactfully
  • Ability to express ideas effectively verbally and in writing
  • Proficient in the use of computers and software programs
  • Demonstrated teamwork and supervisory abilities
  • Valid Alberta Class 5 driver’s licence (or provincial equivalent). Must arrange own transportation to be reimbursed in accordance with City of Edmonton policy. This may require business auto insurance
  • Hire is dependent upon a Police Information Check including Vulnerable Sector check satisfactory to the City of Edmonton

Hours of Work: 33.75 hours per week, Monday – Friday

Salary: $43.202 – $54.180 (Hourly); $76,111.12 – $95,451.62 (Annually)
