This is transportation design and planning work at the professional level. The Planner 1 (Transportation Planning) applies sound community planning principles, adopted policies and engineering design requirements to the development of conceptual plans and preliminary geometric designs for the City’s transportation infrastructure for pedestrian, cycle, vehicle and transit networks. The position participates in the determination of requirements for the City’s transportation networks, in collaboration with planning, engineering, and other interests, to be implemented in relation to specific property development proposals, civil works and other initiatives. The position is also required to communicate the results and rationale for specific design solutions and requirements to the public, external agencies, and key stakeholders. Reporting to the Manager Transportation Planning, the position is expected to exercise considerable independent initiative and judgement in carrying out primary assignments. The scope of work may also involve the preparation of reports, presentations and other materials on transportation planning and policy matters. The position represents the Planning Department at internal and external meetings, and maintains cooperative working relationship with other departments and agencies. Performs related work as required.

Qualifications include a Master’s Degree in Urban Planning or a university degree in Engineering with professional transportation design experience or an equivalent combination of training and experience. The applicant should have a thorough knowledge of urban transportation design and planning principles and practices for roads and other transportation infrastructure. The position requires a strong ability to express transportation design requirements graphically, verbally, and in writing. Proficiency with AutoCAD is important. Familiarity with GIS software and Microsoft Word and Excel is desirable, as is a Driver’s License for the Province of British Columbia, Class 5.
