This position performs skilled technical work in maintaining the performance of the City’s enterprise server infrastructure. The incumbent performs tasks related to sustaining the performance and security of the servers and related infrastructure, and the configuration and deployment of server operating systems, software and hardware. Key tasks are to ensure the functionality and efficiency of server-related infrastructure as well as troubleshooting hardware, software and related technical issues. In particular, the main focus of this position will be related to Linux server ecosystem (Red Hat), operating system management techniques, tools, deployment technologies and virtualization (VMware and Veeam). Considerable independence and judgement is exercised in the system administration. Performs related work as required.

Qualifications include graduation from an institute of technology with a diploma in computer systems technologies with specific courses related to communications and network systems (i.e. Red Hat Certified System Administrator or Red Hat Certified Engineer etc.) plus considerable related experience, including Linux server management experience or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Considerable knowledge of server and workstation operations systems, hardware platforms, applicable to the work performed (i.e. Linux/Red Hat server management), automated deployment (i.e. scripting, Python, or a configuration management system such as Ansible, Puppet or Chef) and security practices and techniques including firewall configuration and maintenance is required, as is the ability to investigate and resolve problems related to the work performed. Experience with NetApp SAN, Amazon Web Services and interoperability with Windows domains would be an asset. An ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with a variety of staff and external contacts will be the key in this position as is considerable knowledge of server deployment technologies and standards, server and workstation operating systems, hardware platforms and configuration options. Driver’s License for the Province of British Columbia, Class 5 is required.

This is a temporary full time position to December 31, 2018 with potential for extension.
