This is manual work of some complexity and variety involving the performance of semi-skilled tasks entailing the exercise of one or more acquired skills. The duties may involve hazardous working conditions, specialized skills and limited supervisory responsibility. An incumbent will be responsible for acting as a lead hand in assigning and supervising the work of a small group of subordinates engaged in parks weeding, watering and litter collection and assists a tradesman in planting, transplanting, pruning and related gardening and maintenance tasks. The Labourer 3 will also provide relief coverage for the Trades Gardeners as directed by a superior. An employee of this class exercises considerable independence of judgement and action particularly in specialized tasks and the work is checked by a supervisor for the attainment of desired objectives. The incumbent will also perform related work as required.
Requirements include up to high school graduation plus considerable experience in horticultural maintenance work including some supervisory work or an equivalent combination of training and experience. The successful candidate must have knowledge of the principles, methods, practices, and materials involved in the work and knowledge of all associated safety hazards and preventative measures. An incumbent is required to have considerable knowledge and skill with the safe use of a variety of hand tools and equipment common to horticultural work. Will possess knowledge of the functions of the Horticulture Division including established procedures governing the work and the relationship between the Horticulture Division and other divisions within the City of Burnaby. Ability to keep simple records related to the work performed is a requirement. Related education such as the Residential Landscape Certificate, as well as landscaping and grounds maintenance experience is preferred. This position involves heavy physical work in all weather conditions. A valid Class 5 BC Drivers License is also required for this position.
Status: Temporary Full Time until October 27, 2017.
