Business Unit Information:

Provision of Financial Services is to ensure accuracy and integrity of financial transactions and reporting systems and to safeguard the assets of the city for the citizens of Airdrie, internal customers, and regulatory bodies. Optimize the use of financial resources through effective financial planning.

Reporting to the Team Leader of Financial Services, this full-time Financial Analyst position is responsible for providing financial support to various departments in the City of Airdrie. Compiling the budgets and quarterly variances, applying Public Sector Accounting Board (PSAB) standards and procedures to analyze financial information and preparing accurate and timely reports, statements and analysis packages for external and internal management reporting. The successful candidate will be proactive, take initiative, have analytical and innovative problem-solving skills and be adaptable to various environments and situations.

Primary Accountabilities Include:

Solid understanding of accounting procedures including demonstrated experience in interpretation, application and implementation supported by strong analytical and planning skills
Project based reconciliation and analysis of accounts (maintain, review and assist with account reconciliation, journal entries and analysis to ensure proper allocations and balance GLs)
Prepare multi-year budgets and forecast models annually
Work with client groups to prepare short and long-term revenue/expense projections for operating and capital budgets
Ensure processes are adhered to for commitments, project changes, contract changes and invoices for capital projects
Ad hoc policy research/financial analysis of city operations and assist with internal control compliance as required
Develop tools to support process improvements
Proactively communicate and collaborate with departments and budget managers to analyze financial needs
Business cases and Council reports as required
Cross train with other finance team members, providing back-up coverage

Education/Experience Requirements:

Bachelor’s Degree in Business, Commerce, Accounting or Finance
Accounting designation (CPA) preferred. Consideration may be given to individuals in the advanced stages of completing a professional accounting designation
4 to 5 years’ experience in financial accounting with preference given to individuals with Municipal experience
Strong working knowledge of financial accounting systems as well as Microsoft Office with expert Excel skills
Previous work experience with Microsoft Great Plains Dynamics or other automated accounting systems would be considered an asset
