SUMMARY:

The Research Assistant will support the conduct of research in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit at CHEO. We recently received grant funding for two 5-year clinical trials. This position will initially be a one-year contract with the possibility to renew.

The Research Assistant will assist researchers in the day-to day activities involved in the conduct of research including, but not limited to, screening and recruiting patients into clinical trials, the creation and maintenance of research files according study guidelines, the collection, scoring and coding of research information and the maintenance of databases.

MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Responsible for patient recruitment including screening and obtaining informed consents.
  • Creation and maintenance of research files according to study guidelines (Good Clinical Practice Guidelines).
  • Accurate collection, scoring, and coding of research information and maintaining data integrity.
  • Responsible for collecting clinical data at specified intervals as stipulated in research protocols.
  • Responsible for collecting biological samples; processing; labeling, storage and shipping.
  • Responsible for timely documentation completion is critical; database update and accuracy is critical.
  • Responsible for knowing and understanding manual of procedures.
  • Assist in the preparation of posters, presentations, letters, memos, abstracts and reports.
  • Perform various administrative duties, including answering phone calls and email messages promptly, relaying messages, photocopying and delivering documents as needed, maintaining databases and reference materials; conducting computerized literature searches and collect, review, organize, and manage research articles.
  • Attend relevant research meetings, record, transcribe and distribute minutes, and assist in their organization.
  • Perform work in accordance with the provisions of the Occupational Health and Safety Act and Regulations and all CHEO corporate/departmental policies and procedures related to Occupational Health and Safety.
  • Flexibility to assist in needs and assistance to the research team
  • Any other duties as may be assigned by manager

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:

  • Police Record Check

(Essential)

  • University undergraduate degree in a health related field (B.A., R.N., B.Sc., BScN, MHA)

  • Understanding of research design, procedures, guidelines and standards governing clinical (Personal Health Information Protection Act, Tri-Council Policy Statement, Good Clinical Practice)

  • Experience in a related role in a health centre or university/academic environment

(Essential)

  • High degree of computer literacy and advanced working knowledge of computer programs, including Windows, Outlook, Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint as well as Adobe Acrobat, and internet resource use required.

  • Good working knowledge of standard office equipment (i.e., fax, photocopier, etc) required.

  • Demonstrated excellent organizational skills, communication and interpersonal skills, attention to detail, initiative, and ability to work with minimal supervision and productively within a team required.

  • Excellent problem solving skills and the ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing

  • High regard for quality, accuracy, attention to detail and flexibility to meet workload demands required.

  • Experience preparing, manuscripts, protocols and reports an asset.

  • Bilingual (French and English) (Preferred)
  • Member of a professional organization (CCRP or equivalent) (Beneficial)
