Library Reporting to the Manager Learning Centre and Library Operations, the Learning Strategist is responsible for the development and delivery of learning support programs and services for students in a post-secondary educational setting; the identification and implementation of effective learning approaches and strategies, and for recruiting, training, mentoring, and providing feedback to peer tutors and group leaders/facilitators. The Learning Strategist will work in collaboration with the Manager and Learning Centre staff to develop and sustain exemplary and comprehensive learning support programs and services for adult learners, including learning strategies, and various supplemental instruction programs such as learning circles.

Responsibilities

Provide comprehensive learning development supports for students, individually and in groups, using a variety of appropriate learning methods, assessments, approaches, and strategies
Plan, develop, and facilitate exemplary and comprehensive learning support programs and services for students including tutoring, drop-in sessions, and supplemental instruction, such as learning circles
Recruit, recommend for hire, train, facilitate, monitor, and provide feedback to, tutors and group leaders/facilitators in the learning support services to foster use of a wide variety of learning strategies
Provide consultation for Learning Centre technicians, and guide, assist, and advise tutors and group leaders/facilitators
Play a lead role in the orientation, training, and mentoring of part-time peer tutors and full-time tutors (co-op students)
Assist tutors to identify students who require exceptional learning supports and provide an appropriate response strategies
Identify, create, revise and adapt appropriate supplemental learning resources for students
Facilitate the effective use of emerging academic technologies to enhance learning support services
Promote a respectful and supportive learning environment based on the principles of inclusion, equity and diversity
Develop, and participate in, initiatives to foster continuous improvement of Learning Centre programs and services
Act as primary liaison with school administrators and faculty to introduce and promote supplemental instruction services, to determine high-risk courses and programs, and to identify students who require additional learning supports

Qualifications

Master’s Degree in Adult Education or equivalent. Certification in Supplemental Instruction (SI) an asset.
Minimum 4 years’ experience developing and delivering academic support programs and services for students in a multi-disciplinary, post-secondary setting
Experience in Mathematics is an asset
Demonstrated effectiveness in collaborating with faculty and staff on interventions as they relate to learning, academic and transition success
Thorough knowledge of educational theory and practice, with a concentration in adult learning theories and strategies
Proven effectiveness as an instructor of adults using a variety of formats including in-person and online
Proficiency in facilitation, problem-solving, inter-personal communication
Ability to work cooperatively, complemented by the ability to exercise independent judgment and ethical decision-making with minimal supervision
Ability to balance interruptions, multiple and varied tasks, and confidential information with discretion
Excellent written and oral communication skills in English, with strong customer service skills and ability to communicate effectively with students, faculty and staff
Evidence of continuing engagement in self-education and professional development to remain current in the field of learning strategy development and support
Demonstrated understanding of diversity, equity and inclusion to meet the needs of our diverse students, staff and college community
