Reporting to the Executive Director, the Director of Culinary Services manages all aspects of the culinary service within the residence to provide an exceptional and nutritious dining experience to the residents, and to ensure the safe and efficient preparation and delivery of food within legislative and fiscal constraints.

Key Responsibilities

  • To plan, organize, direct and supervise the activities of the culinary department to ensure high quality food service
  • To establish and monitor workflow, evaluate production and make changes where necessary to improve quality of service and meet established objectives
  • To coordinate culinary service activities with other departments
  • To inform administration of activities, issues and requirements
  • To schedule hours and assign duties within the department
  • To select , supervise, develop and evaluate performance of culinary staff to ensure a high level of productivity and the best use of staff capabilities
  • To resolve staff personnel problems & refer unsolved concerns to ED
  • To develop and conduct in-service programs, and encourage staff participation
  • To establish and oversee daily scheduled cleaning duties
  • To establish and implement policies and procedures in accordance with regulatory requirements and interpret these for residents, families and other departments
  • To assist in Union matters related to grievance procedures, labour management relations, and contract negotiations
  • To maintain involvement and direct contact with residents
  • To implement the Revera Corporate Menus in cooperation with the residents
  • To ensure food is prepared in accordance with health guidelines, including regular tasting for quality assurance (temperature, taste, etc.)
  • To participate in committee meetings as required, E.g. resident food committee, infection control, quality assurance, health and safety
  • To establish and maintain communications within the department and with other departments to ensure resident needs are being met
  • To prepare and maintain all records such as invoices, reports, statistics, etc., in accordance with policies, procedures and legislative requirements
  • To participate in budget preparation and control; analyze variances and develop action plan for improvement
  • To order, receive and monitor inventory of food and kitchen supplies from authorized vendors within allocated resources
  • To survey and monitor resident satisfaction and food preferences; implements action plan to correct deficiencies
  • To perform duties as needed to facilitate the culinary service operation
  • To uphold and promote the organization’s values and philosophy relating particularly to ethics, morality, and integrity as set out in Revera’s Code of Conduct.


  • Minimum of three (3) years experience in a Culinary Management role in the Retirement industry – different levels of home is considered an asset;
  • Completion of a two (2) year community college Food Services Supervisor course or equivalent;
  • Must hold a Red Seal designation or the equivalent;
  • Must be knowledgeable about Provincial Food Premises Act; CCHSA / ORCA standards; Occupational Health and Safety Act;
  • Familiar with unionized environments and language;
  • Strong leadership skills and experience managing a team;
  • Ability to analyze challenging situations, provide assistance with problem solving and development of action plans;
  • Excellent time management and decision making skills;
  • Ability to multi task with minimal supervision;
  • Must possess strong interpersonal and team building skills as well as a positive attitude; ability to engage staff
  • Ability to work independently as well as be an integral member of a highly focused and results driven team;
  • Demonstration of exceptional oral and written communication skills;
  • Must have proficient computer skills using Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Suite);
  • Must be willing to travel as the job requirements dictate.
