Function:
Leads a team, unit or location in the planning, conception, gathering, and production of content across programs and platforms.

Reporting to the Executive Producer of News, this position will be responsible for the assignment of editorial coverage for newsgathering for all CBC Nova Scotia platforms. Strong assignment and editorial judgement are essential. The successful candidate will demonstrate a thorough understanding of what it takes to produce daily content to support our digital platforms including social media accounts radio news and current affairs shows and television programming. An extensive demonstrated knowledge of Nova Scotia is required.

There is a regular and ongoing requirement for the Senior Producer to plan, direct, and co-ordinate the work of others, and play a critical role in managing the performance of team members through ongoing feedback. The senior producer must balance a senior leadership role

with the continuous requirement to focus on details that ensure our journalism is of the highest quality, and conforms to CBC’s journalistic Standards and Practices.

The Senior Producer must be able to make immediate decisions in complex and stressful environments, and lead staff in the use of production techniques and procedures consistent with an integrated content company.

Key Tasks:
Responsible for assigning editorial resources, daily, to support all CBC platforms (Digital, Radio, Television and Social).

Identifies daily and future stories, trends and emerging issues for CBC coverage.

Assists in planning multi-platform coverage for breaking news events and specials such as election coverage.

Ensures news staff conforms to CBC Journalistic Standards and Practices while gathering elements.

Works with Executive producer to conduct risk assessments to ensure employee health and safety.

Manages a daily outlook, calendar of future newsworthy events and file of original reporter pitches.

Ensures network coverage and resource requests are fulfilled.

Works with program and platform producers to ensure the station priorities — as set by Strategy 2020 — are supported.

Works with Executive Producer to monitor, manage and approve overtime.

Supports team development through ongoing feedback.

Is the first point of contact for members of the public contacting the newsroom phone number to contribute story ideas, lobby for coverage, complain about stories, ask general questions about CBC.

Performs all or part of the function or duties of an equivalent or lower classification.

Qualifications

You possess the following:
Job requires a university degree or equivalent.

Seven (7) years’ experience of which three must involve work in broadcasting or a closely related industry, which is directly related to the area of assignment.

Candidates may be subject to skills and knowledge testing.
