We have an opening for a field producer in the CBC Calgary Newsroom. This is an excellent opportunity for someone with the right experience and range of production skills to work in a vital role in one of Canada’s most dynamic cities.
You will team up with CBC Network reporters based in Calgary and liaise with local staff to deliver everything from breaking news, live coverage, packaged reports in various forms. Your principal clients will be network broadcast programs and national digital platforms. But you will also assist in the production of content for CBC Calgary aimed at local audiences.
As a flexible, multi-skilled member of our Calgary team, you may also be asked to step into a reporter role on occasion–filing packaged reports and/or handling “live hits.”
Please note this is a permanent position.
Duties and Responsibilities
As a network producer in Calgary, you will be expected to:
Work closely with network assignment team in Toronto and Calgary to ensure strong daily news coverage from Calgary.
Keep track of important files and ensure colleagues in both Calgary and Toronto are aware of upcoming news events.
Deploy to other parts of Alberta and beyond to provide coverage as required.
Work closely with reporters on all aspects of story development.
Help develop interesting story ideas and produce original journalism for all platforms.
Conduct research, develop contacts, set up interviews, arrange travel when necessary and prepare shoot schedules for the coverage of stories.
Occasionally handle Live hits or other reporting duties for various platforms as required.
Produce highly-creative current affairs pieces for TV and Radio if required.
Assemble radio, television and digital video packages–either alone or working with editors.
Shoot basic video elements as required.
Help expand the range of fresh, enterprising content on the CBC News web pages and social media sites.
The following assets and abilities are required for this position:
At least five years of relevant experience demonstrating proven ability in news media production.
University degree or equivalent.
Broad understanding of Alberta affairs including key political, economic and social forces.
Good eye for strong local stories and how to produce them for national audiences.
Refined sense of production values and creative story-telling.
Strong editorial judgement.
Ability to set priorities, plan and meet deadlines under challenging circumstances.
Ability to file live or packaged reports for radio and television and/or craft stories for CBC digital platforms.
Familiarity with audio editing tools such as Dalet/Adobe audition as well as field technologies including FTP and Dejero.
Familiarity with the fundamentals of digital publishing including use of Polopoly.
Strong interpersonal skills with a successful track record of working as part of small team.
Ability to shoot and edit basic video elements is an asset.
Candidates may be subject to skills and knowledge testing.
