As the Plant Pathology Technician, you will be working in the plant disease program in Aberdeen, Saskatchewan and is responsible for pathology support to achieve high level disease resistance breeding within the Victory hybrid breeding program. Under the direction of the Plant Pathologist, you will concentrate on execution of laboratory maintenance and research experiments including plant and pathogen management, media and inoculum preparation, plant disease assays and data organization.
- Plant disease pathogen management and production. This includes sterile media production, single spore blackleg isolations, production and maintenance of pathogen cultures, inoculum production used in disease resistance screening.
- Execute plant disease screening both indoor and outdoor for blackleg resistance including inoculation, disease rating, data organization and reporting to pathologist.
- Plant management including sowing, watering and fertilizing, preparation for disease resistance screening, general plant maintenance through to the end of the experiment.
- Manage daily lab activities including supply organization, general lab and equipment organization and maintenance, growth-chamber monitoring, laminar flow hood and autoclave use and maintenance. Active participation in location safety program and leadership for pathology lab safety. Any other duties as assigned.
Technical certificate in biology and laboratory practice skills
Minimum 1 year experience in a research laboratory program
General knowledge of biological lab practices and plant management
Familiar with various Microsoft Office Software
Ability to work on multiple tasks simultaneously and prioritize work effectively
Demonstrated excellent teamwork, interpersonal and organizational communication skills
Must possess a valid Canadian driver’s license with a clean driving record
Must be legally entitled to work for Cargill in Canada
Bsc. in biology, plant sciences or a related field
Experience with blackleg disease of canola or other canola plant pathogens
Well-developed knowledge of canola plant pathology
General knowledge of canola crop production and plant breeding
Highly self-motivated and detail oriented
