Opening Statement

Responsibilities

The laboratory manager is responsible for the day to day operations of the laboratory and ensures the provision of an efficient, effective, safe and high quality technical laboratory services at St. Martha’s Regional Hospital, Strait Richmond Hospital, Eastern Memorial Hospital, St. Mary’s Memorial Hospital and Guysborough Memorial Hospital as well as assigned off site collection clinics. These sites provide testing and blood collections services to both adults and pediatrics. The scope of this position involves multi-sites, requiring site visits. The scope of the technical responsibility includes chemistry, hematology, anatomical pathology, blood transfusion, laboratory information system, phlebotomy and specimen processing. This role reports to the Director of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine- Eastern Zone. The manager leads a team of approximately 40 staff of clerical, laboratory technologists and medical laboratory assistants, within a coleadership model with the zone pathologists. The Manager assures quality and compliance with existing policies and procedures and collaborates with the Director, other management and staff on the management of resources. The Manager assists the Director in planning and maintaining policies and procedures which will be in congruence with the overall corporate plan of the laboratory as it relates to Pathology and Laboratory Medicine. The Manager assists the Director in providing leadership to effect efficient operation of the Pathology and Laboratory Medicine Zone service. This role is accountable for the direct supervision of daily laboratory operations and ongoing support for the delivery of high quality patient and family centred care across the Zone. The Manager works collaboratively with medical and clinical staff within the Zone service and the other NSHA Zone Laboratories to accomplish departmental and divisional objectives, goals and strategic directions.

Qualifications

* Undergraduate degree on health related discipline, health administration, business administration or related subject required.
* Master’s Degree in related field would be considered an asset
* An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered for this position.
* Current registration with the Canadian Society of Medical Laboratory Science / licensure with the Nova Scotia College of Medical Laboratory Technologists required.
* Minimum five (5) years recent experience in managing human, financial and material resources allocated to laboratory services
* Experience in a unionized environment would be considered an asset.
* Progressive leadership and / or management experience.
* Ongoing professional development and / or upgrading as required
* Experience and knowledge of computer applications including Microsoft office, Email and laboratory information systems (Meditech) required.
* Possess knowledge of healthcare structures, environments and service as they relate to Pathology and Laboratory Medicine services.
* Excellent communication skills, both oral and written
* Critical thinking, problem solving and decision making skills
* Experience in staff and program development and evaluation
* Networking, negotiation and change management skills
* Organizational skills
* Commitment to ongoing professional development
* Previous work attendance may be considered.
* Physical capabilities to perform the duties of the position
* Travel will be required

* Annually access the training and education on patient, client and personal safety made available by NSHA
* Previous experience with LEAN workflow analysis and review and previous experience with Failure Mode Effects and * Analysis review would be considered an asset.
* Competencies in other languages an asset, French preferred.
