Opening Statement

The Nova Scotia Health Authority is the largest provider of health services in Nova Scotia. We are over 22,000 employees who provide health care and support services in hospitals, health centres and community-based programs throughout Nova Scotia.

We are currently recruiting 2015 Spring and Fall Graduate Nurses for permanent full-time and Casual positions with various departments across Nova Scotia Health Authority. The number of positions and the nature of the assignments that will be available have yet to be determined.

This opportunity applies to any 2015 Spring and Fall Graduate Nurses seeking employment with Nova Scotia Health Authority. Please include in your cover letter which site you prefer and your top three preferred units/areas. Sites within NSHA include:

  • Colchester-East Hants, Cumberland and Pictou
  • Annapolis Valley, South Shore and South West Nova Scotia
  • Halifax, Eastern Shore and West Hants
  • Cape Breton, Guysborough and Antigonish

Please note that successful applicants:
1. Will be required to provide a Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector Search and assume any associated costs as a condition of employment. You will need to have your criminal record submitted before commencing employment.

2. Will be required to provide two written reference letters at the time of the interview.

3. Will be required to apply for a temporary license as soon as possible so not to delay their joining date and orientation.

4. Will be expected to write the NCLEX within the duration of the first temporary license

The Graduate Nurse (GN) is accountable to function within her/his level of competence.

The GN utilizes the nursing process, critical thinking, and problem solving skills to provide holistic care to individuals, families, groups, communities, and populations across the life span.

The GN is responsible for the overall coordination and direction of nursing care.

The GN has the knowledge, skill, and judgment needed to provide competent, evidenced based nursing practice.

The GN is accountable for the development, implementation, and ongoing evaluation of the plan of care to achieve patient/client outcomes.

The GN contributes to the efficient and effective functioning of the unit.

The GN accepts responsibility for maintaining and continually enhancing competencies through ongoing professional development including participation in education programs, research, and continuous quality activities.

The GN practices according to the Canadian Nurses Association Code of Ethics for Graduate Nurses, the College of Registered Nurses of Nova Scotia Standards of Nursing Practice, specialty standards as applicable, and the policies and procedures of the Nova Scotia Health Authority.

The GN is responsible and accountable for his/her nursing practice and conduct as defined by the College of Registered Nurses of Nova Scotia and for ensuring that his/her registration is current and valid.


  • Graduate of an accredited school of nursing and eligible for registration in Nova Scotia
  • Effective communication skills
  • Ability to work in a high stress environment
  • Competencies in other languages an asset, French preferred

Additional Information

Should you be selected to join the Specialty Units (ER, OR, ICU & PACU), you will be required to complete the relevant post graduate nursing program and attend all the training sessions conducted by the Unit’s Educators (when operationally feasible for the unit). Due to the sponsorship granted to achieve this, successful applicants will be required to sign a return of service agreement with Nova Scotia Health Authority.
