Primary Purpose: The Community Relations and Events Lead works with Canterbury internal and external stakeholders. She/he will help to plan and execute a broad range of communications; community engagement and organize fundraising events to raise organizational profile and fundraising goal.

Nature of Work: We are looking for a strategic thinker who is empathetic and compassionate in senior housing/ residence. Reporting to the Director Fund Development the Community Relations and Events Lead will be a knowledge expert in communication, community/public relations, and events planning and executing events to attract prospect donors, increase awareness, and leverage Canterbury Foundation’s goodwill in the community.


  • The successful candidate will be responsible for leading and overseeing Canterbury Foundation’s communication including producing organizational marketing and promotional materials, fine-tuning external communications, cases for support and social media/media engagement.
  • The candidate assumes to build community relations and leads the organization of events as necessary, i.e. fundraising, cultivation or stewardship events.
  • Responsible for establishing, maintaining and leveraging corporate sponsors to maximize opportunities for marketing and messaging initiatives in support of Canterbury Foundation’s donor awareness and acquisition.
  • Develop relationships with new partners where appropriate to reach target community groups/service clubs and to develop and expand upon the foundation’s messaging capability.
  • Considerable expertise related to the development, coordination, implementation and continuing evaluation of community engagement initiatives.
  • Supervise and manage volunteer initiative/program for the foundation. She/he will oversee, manage and mentor a team of dedicated event volunteers.
  • S/he will play an integral role on the fundraising team through effective planning, organization and implementation of all Canterbury special events and related activities.
  • This individual will develop initiatives to increase donor retention, upgrade sponsorships, and achieve the acquisition of new supporters to ensure short term and long term financial objectives are met.
  • Management of all related administrative and office operations associated with the role is essential. Pre-event coordination e.g. data entry, promotional materials, phones, invitations, name tags, kit/material preparation, registration coordination, thank you letters with receipts, etc.
  • The position requires collaboration with staff, volunteers, sponsors, participants, and event vendors.
  • Inherent in the job is the flexibility to work overtime and during evenings and weekends when necessary. Arrange pick up and/or delivery of donated items.
  • Relationship management of donors, sponsors and auction donations.
  • Manage confidential donor information.
  • Contribute to the leadership team by attending meetings, sharing ideas, increasing employee donations.
  • Create reports for management.
  • Negotiate contracts and recommend improvements or upgrades, where applicable.


Education: Post-secondary education in Public Relations, Event Management, Communications, preferred or equivalent experience will be considered.

Experience: Minimum of three years’ progressive experience in event planning, with a proven demonstration of an entrepreneurial spirit, goal setting and execution, and extensive experience in special events, and community fundraising.

Transportation: Must possess reliable personal transportation and be approved by insurance carrier to drive personal vehicle with a valid driver’s license.
