The successful candidate will
Supervise the operation of an assigned area of the shift or section, assist in the management of the efficient manual and machine processing of mail, set daily priorities for the assigned area to ensure that deadlines and service commitments are met, assign and confirm available staff to different areas of the operation according to fluctuating mail volume, and request additional manpower or equipment as required
Promote and implement workplace safety and health programs for the work unit including: coaching and directing employees on safe work practices in order to reduce accident frequency and severity; conducting investigations and reporting and following up on accident incidences; addressing and resolving health and safety issues in a timely and efficient manner; conducting safety inspections and taking corrective action to rectify unsafe operating conditions; and overseeing the return-to-work and accommodation of employees unable to perform the full range of duties in their job
Supervise, coach and provide guidance and leadership to employees, promote a respectful environment in the workplace, administer human resources processes such as staffing, performance management, disability management and attendance management, resolve staff issues including taking disciplinary action if required, consult with Labour Relations and/or union representatives on the application of the terms of the collective agreement, and create learning and knowledge transfer opportunities for assigned staff
Estimate workloads in order to arrange for adequate staff to be on duty, recommend the use of overtime as required, and occasionally authorize its use when working alone
Conduct hourly throughput checks on mechanized processes and daily observations of employee productivity for manual sorting, investigate abnormalities and work to improve performance and implement best practices in productivity
Analyze daily productivity reports to determine problems and trends and share analysis and results with the team
Liaise with other sections in operations to ensure the efficient movement of mail and employees between sections
Perform frequent quality checks on all aspects of the designated shift or section, resolve minor issues and escalate more significant problems
Maintain employees time and leave to ensure the accurate and timely pay for all employees, produce reports, resolve related data issues and perform other administrative tasks associated with a team leader role
Job requirements (Education and Work experience)
High School Diploma or provincial equivalent (GED) (Equivalent work experience, as defined below, may be accepted in lieu of a High School Diploma)
1.a) Minimum 1 year experience managing a team.
1.b) Minimum 2 years experience working within a unionized environment
2. Working knowledge of Microsoft Office (i.e., understand the major features of each software application)
Experience with distribution processes
