The HR Assistant supports the development and implementation of HR’s strategies and initiatives through its day-to-day interactions with department leaders and staff. This is an opportunity to connect the business strategy with the people strategy.

Responsibilities and Activities

Corporate Culture:

  • Communicating what the company believes in/stands for
  • Providing employees with a sense of direction and expected behaviour
  • Shaping employee’s attitudes about themselves, the organization, and their roles
  • Fostering loyalty and commitment through a changing environment.

Talent Management:

  • Facilitates employee engagement and performance management to maximize employee’s contributions
  • Accelerates employee relations and conflict resolution
  • Workforce planning:
  • Planning labour needs
  • Training
  • Redundancy/knowledge sharing
  • Succession planning.

Full-cycle Recruitment:

  • Supports all aspects of the hiring and onboarding process:
  • Ensures job descriptions are meaningful and up to date
  • Administration of job postings, selection, and orientation
  • Supports onboarding and new-hire training.

Legal Compliance:

  • Maintains employee records
  • Compliance with employment legislation, PIPA, and FOIP.

Total Compensation:

  • Participates in the planning and management of the following:
  • Base pay
  • Performance pay
  • Benefits
  • Assists with developing and administering an employee recognition and rewards program.

HR Operations:

  • Records maintenance/metrics
  • Develop and administer corporate policies, programs, and best practices
  • HSE support
  • Project management
  • General administration.

Education, Skills, and Capabilities

Must be able to communicate clearly, both written and orally, as to communicate with employees, members of the management team, and in group presentations and meetings

Must be able to prioritize, plan work activities, and use time efficiently

Must be dependable, accurate, thorough, and able to monitor work for quality

A CHRP designation or a Bachelor’s degree in human resources is an asset plus a few years work experience

Can work in a collaborative manner to solve problems:

  • Proactive in asking questions
  • Takes the time to understand all factors of the situation
  • Ability to exercise tact and diplomacy

A real problem solver:

  • Someone who can look at an issue and implement a creative solution
  • Doesn’t just follow a process; rather, will revise a process if needed and take the initiative to help others understand the new process and reasons for the change

Comfortable identifying relevant systems and metrics that are cost effective, measure necessary variables, and establish benchmarks

Has legal knowledge and attention to detail in the drawing up of contracts or policies

Always puts the success of the team first

Coaching skills

Not only can work in MS Office Suite at an Intermediate level or better but also is a superstar with technology and HR software and communication devices.

Working Conditions

Occasional travel may be required within Edmonton.
