Summer Camp Leader
Full Time, Limited Term: June 20 – August 26, 2016
Responsibilities:
- Plan and present a weeklong summer camp program, including stories, crafts, games and activities to be run weekly for 8 weeks (July 4th – August 26th).
- Present education programs and tours ensuring accuracy of information and the maintenance of the conservation message based on the Calgary Zoo’s mandate.
- When necessary research and develop educational programming based on the direction of the Youth Program Coordinator.
- Evaluate the program layout and content based on program performance.
- Maintain consistent leadership and behaviour management of campers as necessary.
- Work with partner leader with regards to teaching and camp techniques, zoological and botanical information.
- Adhere to the Calgary Zoo’s policies and guidelines.
- Maintain a safe, clean working environment for animals, visitors, and staff.
- Other related duties as required.
Qualifications:
- Possess a valid first aid certificate and clear criminal record check
- At least two years background in natural history, zoology, biology and /or education acquired via university, college or other training facilities teaching natural history and conservation.
- A keen interest in and knowledge of the natural history of Alberta is an asset.
- Knowledge related to The Calgary Zoo and its collection is an asset.
- The ability to present information about nature and nature conservation in an entertaining and educational manner.
- A keen interest in natural history.
- Experience working with children and adults in a camp or zoo docent setting.
- A background in any of the following is an additional asset: leading tours, storytelling, leading sing-a-longs, leading games and activities, and/or presenting zoo education programs.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills that can be demonstrated.
Working Conditions:
This position requires considerable on grounds mobility where there are long periods of time spent on foot indoors and outdoors in all weather. Some lifting may be required.
