Position: Family Support Counsellor

Responsible to: Program Coordinator

Division: Family and Children’s Services

Position Description:

To provide support and direction in assist refugees and immigrant families settling in Calgary, and who require information and parenting programming in both individual and group settings.

Flexibility to work some evenings and/or weekend shift work is required. Position is until June 30th, 2017.


  • To provide parenting support services to newcomer families including:
    • Case management including individualized support and follow up
    • Assess all children and families for special needs/concerns and risk factors
    • Provide information to all families on a range of topics, including: medical system, health promotion, climate appropriate clothing, food and nutrition, education system, prenatal care, child welfare, recreation, etc.
    • Connect families with relevant community support services
    • To open and maintain clients’ records and address clients’ needs
    • To provide cultural interpretation for families and language translation service to clients and other mainstream agencies
    • To conduct and obtain follow ups with clients
    • Maintain promising practices through continual learning and development
    • Participate in relevant Triple P training and education as determined by senior staff
    • To demonstrate interest and ability in working with refugees and immigrants
    • Actively participate in the evaluation of the program
    • To engage immigrant parents and children in interactive activities and events


    • To undertake administrative duties relative to the efficient and effective operation of the division as required
    • Maintain client file recording in appropriate and accurate manner
    • Collect, maintain and report statistical data
    • Develop and administer program evaluation system
    • Submit monthly statistical reports and evaluation to supervisor
    • To be able to work flexible hours


    • Degree and/or related experience in Social Services
    • Fluency in English and Punjabi, Hindi and/or Urdu
    • Understanding and appreciation of the service needs of various community and ethno-cultural groups
    • Working knowledge of the settlement and integration process
    • Positive attitude and willingness to take initiative and work both independently and collaboratively
    • Interest in and demonstrated ability to work with immigrants and mainstream agencies
    • Knowledge of child-development, parent education, and the social services system in Calgary
    • Ability to engage immigrant parents and kids in activities and events
    • Knowledge/experience with cross cultural communication cultural diversity
    • Strong written and oral communication skills
    • Must have access to a vehicle and a valid driver’s license
    • Recent criminal record check
