The Boys & Girls Club Services of Greater Victoria’s mission is to provide safe, supportive places where children, youth and families experience opportunity, overcome barriers, develop skills, positive relationships and confidence for successfully leading their lives and communities. We provide social, recreational and developmental services to children, youth and their families that support all aspects of our mission. The Agency supports practice through a trauma informed lens, placing priority on participant safety, choice and self-determination. All Boys & Girls Club programs support participant empowerment and skill development. The Boys & Girls Club operates accredited programs approved by the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF).

The role: Under the direct supervision of the Team Lead, the Support Worker is responsible for providing one on one support to an assigned participant and assisting with the participant’s integration into the club’s daily programs. Programming will take place in the context of a licensed before and school program and may include Professional Development Days and Holiday camps, dependent on participate registration. This position is funded through VIHA.

Key duties and responsibilities include:
The Support Worker is expected to build a relationship with the participant(s), and work with the overall Club staff to ensure the participant’s successful integration into the program. This candidate will be expected to follow the short and long term goals of the participant and their family and communicate accomplishments and struggles with the participant’s parent and support team. The successful candidate will bring to their role: energy, creativity, dependability, organization, a passion for empowering all youth and a general attitude of support to the community club and agency.

Qualifications and requirements:

  • Minimum of 20 hours of training or courses in one of the following areas: child development, guidance, health and safety, or nutrition.
  • Minimum 1 year hands-on experience supporting a child with diverse abilities
  • Experience encouraging children in positive social interaction
  • Demonstrated preventative approach to behavioral intervention
  • Demonstrated experience in relationship building and working with diverse family systems
  • Excellent communication skills both written and verbal
  • Medical note, stating “physically and psychologically capable of working with children”
  • Current first aid and CPR certification, mandatory

Terms of employment:

  • Satisfactory criminal record check
  • Term: September 8, 2015 to June 24, 2016
  • Hours: Approximately 15 hours per week (Monday- Friday 2:30- 5:30pm); some full day programs (Pro-D days )
  • Compensation: $ 16.07 per hour plus 6% vacation pay
