POSITION SUMMARY

This is a rotating position that will include some weekends.

The role of the Community Support Worker is to provide support services and counselling to developmentally delayed, Deaf adults, who may additionally have low language skills and a mental health diagnosis. These services are to be provided within the individual’s supportive living environment and within the community.

PRIMARY DUTIES

  • Provide the individuals in care with the opportunities to increase their skills in the areas of communication, daily living, behavior management and community awareness using a positive, humanistic approach

  • Must be able to understand, plan and write reports and programs, including Person Directed Plans
  • Able to match the communication levels of the individuals
  • Handling and reconciling of petty cash
  • Plan activities and training opportunities for the individuals
  • Must be willing to work flexible hours – shifts may include days, weekends and overnights as needed based on the program needs
  • Administer medications, attend appointments and ensure that all medical needs are being met on a continuing basis
  • Must be able to develop relationships with the families of the individuals in care and the other agencies involved in their lives
  • Ensure that yearly appointments are achieved for personal health of all individuals in the program
  • Provide one to one support for individuals at community programs as well as internal programs when required
  • Able to work successfully in both a team centred environment, plus work independently in a self-directed manner

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Post Secondary Degree/Diploma in Social Services or a related field.
  • Experience with adults who have intellectual disability / psychiatric issues and/or physical disabilities
  • Safe Management / CPR-First Aid / Pharmacology Courses an asset
  • Fluency in American Sign Language (ASL) and knowledge of Deaf culture
  • At least one year experience in related field
  • Valid “G” Driver’s License and a willingness to drive company vehicle
