Job Description
The Managed Systems Administrator is primarily responsible for providing systems administration support to Managed Services customers through onsite work at client premises and remotely via telephone and or web conferencing.

  • Provide systems administration support to Managed Services customers (via escalated tickets) and phone queue.
  • Perform server/operating system maintenance during off-hours scheduled maintenance windows (OS/application patching, hardware upgrades, migrations, etc.)
  • Technical solutions development and capacity planning
  • Performance, security and service monitoring (network, server, service and application levels), and response where necessary and applicable – Research and documentation
  • Security auditing and reporting
  • Follow BlueBird’s ITIL-based practices (Change Management, Incident Management, etc)
  • Disaster recovery management (backup checks, documentation updates)
  • Health and performance monitoring of servers and services offered by BlueBird IT


  • Perform hardware maintenance on x86/x64 based hardware (add/change CPUs, RAM, hard disks, adapter cards, etc.)
  • Develop and refine procedures and documentation for Linux and Windows based servers
  • Configure and troubleshoot networking (TCP/IP, UDP) on servers
  • Configure and install commercial binary-only software
  • Trouble-shoot complex software issues on a variety of systems running the software listed in the Applications/Services under the Required Skills section below
  • Manage backup solutions for clients


  • Supports the Windows and MAC systems
  • Ensures compliance with internal procedures and makes recommendations as appropriate
  • Recommends I.T. related purchases
  • Performs and verifies daily back-ups on the all servers
  • Monitors the servers’ performance and check the systems’ log regularly to resolve any problems and to ensure that the servers operate efficiently
  • Installs new or rebuild existing servers and configure hardware, peripherals, services, settings, directories, and storage
  • Troubleshoots any network problems to support both internal LAN and external WAN connections, printers and other network devices
  • Supports the IT Manager with projects as directed
  • Performs testing of applications and patches before deployment
  • Maintains all computer equipment in all locations; set-up, install, transfer workstations. Includes maintaining legitimate licenses on all installed applications
  • Maintains user profiles in the Windows domain
  • Supports all applications pertaining to Production department, Technical department, equipment and databases
  • Supports users with all computer related issues
  • Develops and maintains installation and configuration procedures
  • Supports all telecommunications hardware and software in all facilities
  • Be an escalation point for Level 1 and 2 technicians
  • Train and mentor Level 1 and 2 technicians


  • 3-5 years experience as an administrator in a complex environment, ideally in a Managed Services or Internet Service Provider environment
  • Recent and significant experience planning, organizing and implementing assigned work
  • Excellence in customer service and communication.
  • Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Infrastructure (current versions of SQL, Exchange, IIS, Active Directory) implementation and maintenance
  • Advanced knowledge of server and storage hardware, Internet protocols and technologies, including network hardware concepts (firewalls, routers, load balancers, etc)

Practical experience of the following technologies is required:

  • Server virtualization (VMWare)
  • Backup technologies for Server Virtualization
  • MAC
  • Windows XP and Windows 7/8/10 Desktop Support experience
  • System Monitoring Methodologies

Experience with the following technologies would be considered an asset:

  • MAC, SQL Database administration
  • Dell Servers, Sonic Wall Firewalls, Dell Storage Servers, Enterprise SAN, Cisco Servers, Fortigate
  • Ability to work under pressure in a team environment
  • Familiarity with Automation Platforms (SCCM, WDS and GFI MaxFocus, Labtech)


  • Proficient in Network designs & concepts, and configuration of switches and routers
  • Proficient use of Microsoft servers and applications including: MS Office, Exchange, SQL
  • Proficient use of applications including: Back-Up Exec, Anti-Malware, Vmware, Hyper-V
  • Computer hardware, software, and printer troubleshooting
  • Post-secondary school education in a related discipline
  • Microsoft certified engineer
  • Networking certification an asset
