Black & McDonald Limited is actively seeking a Junior Environmental Monitor located in Kincardine, Ontario. You are responsible for observing industry activities to ensure compliance with land-use and other environmental impact agreements. You will conduct an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) to identify strategies to minimize and mitigate the potential effects of the landfill on the environment. You will be responsible for monitoring how the company clears the land. For example, you’ll ensure that it follows regulations for the removal and storage of topsoil and sub-surface materials, stays within authorized zones, and avoids sensitive areas. During construction, you will also observe the site to make sure necessary permits are posted, waste is disposed of appropriately, and fuel and other hazardous materials are handled properly. Until the Wind Farm is complete, you will monitor the activities and environmental impact of the project and report any issues to the appropriate person, whether it is the company, the regulatory agency, or the community. This is a junior role suitable for a summer co-op student or a new graduate.​

Responsibilities:

  • Conduct daily, weekly, monthly, quarterly and annual sampling and monitoring programs as required by applicable authorizations, permits, licenses and other regulatory instruments and any site and corporate requirements
  • Respond to environmental incidents and spills as required, complete spill reporting forms
  • Collect samples, for example air, water, and soil samples
  • Record data and observations in an accurate and well-organized manner
  • Compile and maintain environmental data and records including results of site inspections, field sampling notes, field measured sample results, etc.
  • Assist in the operation and maintenance of equipment, including laboratory, field, and monitoring equipment
  • Identify and locate landscape resources
  • Read maps and navigate variable terrain, including operating vehicles
  • Prepare technical reports detailing monitoring activities
  • Communicate effectively with project team members
  • Prepare for jobs, including attending daily meetings to discuss upcoming jobs
  • Review Job Environmental Analysis (JEA) reports that detail project-specific environmental issues

Requirements:

  • Associates or Bachelors Degree/diploma in Chemistry or Chemical Engineering or related field and minimum of 3 years’ experience in environmental sampling and analyses, including minimum of 2 years in air sampling and analyses
  • Degree or diploma in related environmental program
  • CAC or CSST certification and contractor management skills
  • Understanding of building engineering and structural design knowledge of site planning
  • Knowledge of handling and use of surface water, groundwater, air and soil sampling equipment
  • Knowledge of the requirements of all environmental authorizations, permits, licences and other regulatory instruments
  • Knowledge of all site health, safety and environmental programs
  • Good written and oral communication skills
  • Good organizational skills and ability to manage timelines and priorities
  • An enthusiastic team player who works well under pressure
  • Attention to detail
  • Intermediate level knowledge of Microsoft Office Basic level of data management software
  • Transportation of Dangerous Goods trained
  • Working in the outdoors in all weather conditions
