Bird Ecology and Conservation Ontario (BECO) is seeking 3 to 5 highly motivated field biologists to assist with monitoring bobolink breeding success in agricultural fields in eastern Ontario. BECO is a small non-profit organization focused on using ecological research to further the conservation of birds in Ontario (www.beco-birds.org).
All positions begin 01 May 2017. Positions will vary in length from 3 to 6 months, depending on funding and the experience of applicants. For the duration of the field season (01 May to 31 July) all positions will be based in Renfrew County.
Tasks and responsibilities: • Bird surveys to record the presence of grassland birds in agricultural areas; • Nest searching and nest monitoring; • Territory mapping and behavioural observations; • Vegetation data collection; • Data entry and management; • Communicating with landowners and the general public; • Assisting with other field work and project tasks as required; • Contracts extending beyond the field season will involve additional tasks such as data organization, data proofing, and report writing.
Qualifications: • Strong interest in avian ecology and conservation; • Excellent auditory and visual bird identification skills; • Strong organizational and record keeping skills; • Self-motivated and able to work with little supervision; • Able to navigate in the field using a map, compass, and GPS; • Able to work both independently and in a team environment; • Comfortable working early mornings and in demanding field conditions (variable weather, biting insects); • Comfortable working around cattle; • Proficient in Microsoft Excel and Access; • Familiarity with GIS software; • Valid driver’s licence, good driving record, and access to own vehicle with valid insurance.
Preference will be given to candidates who have (1) the ability to identify the majority of bird species in eastern Ontario by sight and sound, (2) previous experience conducting avian point counts and nest monitoring, and (3) completed post-secondary education in wildlife ecology or a related discipline. Additionally, candidates should have good interpersonal skills and the ability to foster and maintain good relationships with landowners. First aid certification is also an asset.
Applicants should have access to their own vehicle for the duration of the position. A significant amount of driving will be required to travel to field sites (mileage will be reimbursed). Field sites are located in Renfrew County in eastern Ontario. Shared housing near field sites will be provided for the duration of the field season (01 May to 31 July). For contracts extending beyond the field season, candidates must have access to their own accommodation and ability to work remotely. For most of the field season, all staff should expect to work approximately 6 days per week. Overtime will be compensated with paid time off in lieu.

Compensation: $2,200 – $2,700 per month, depending on experience. Field housing provided 01 May to 31 July.
