The Plant and Animal Health Branch provides a veterinary and plant diagnostic laboratory and disease investigation services for the Province. The Branch monitors disease dynamics and designs programs for disease control and prevention through extension and regulations. The Animal Health Centre is the provincial veterinary diagnostic laboratory and, as part of the Plant and Animal Health Branch, provides diagnostic, monitoring, investigative and surveillance programs for the livestock, poultry and finfish production industries of British Columbia.

As Laboratory Scientist – Virology & Molecular Diagnostics, you detect, analyze, and specifically identify a wide range of viral pathogens from numerous animal species. You will be required to multi-task using several different protocols at any one time in both the Virology and Molecular Diagnostics section of the laboratory, thus you use extreme precision and care as well as sterile technique in performing these assays to avoid sample contamination and disease risk to the operator and other technicians. You utilize professional judgement performing non-routine molecular diagnostic procedures requiring individual assessments. Detail oriented and an analytical thinker, you keep accurate records, accept responsibility for results and discuss findings with the veterinary virologist, and the Head of Virology & Molecular Diagnostics, veterinary pathologists and other ministry personnel. If you want to have a positive impact on the prevention, control and eradication of diseases, we encourage you to apply to this position.
