We are seeking up to four (4) seasonal Program Instructors who will report to the Education Coordinators. Program Instructors will deliver programs, guide tours and act in a leadership capacity in our summer day camps during July and August. Program Instructors are responsible for delivering high quality, interactive and informative interpretive, nature-based and recreation programs for children, families, schools, camps, and organized groups that visit the Assiniboine Park and Zoo. Program Instructors will ensure extraordinary experiences for learners by creating a fun, safe, and positive atmosphere with a sense of belonging and respect. While working with APC’s day camp program, Program Instructors will be responsible engaging large and small groups of children by delivering educational and interactive activities, games, and interpretive talks while ensuring extraordinary experiences by creating a fun, safe, and positive atmosphere with a sense of belonging and respect. Duties may also include being responsible for the day-to-day supervision, implementation and evaluation of summer day camp programs including partial planning of activities. They will also work closely with the Education Coordinators and volunteers. Program Instructors will develop extensive knowledge of the Park and all its amenities (Zoo, Gardens, and Galleries) and relevant programming information to ensure extra ordinary visitor experiences for everyone. Program Instructors may also be asked to assist with training camp counselors, supervising aspects of summer camp, participating as a camp counsellor, and other duties as assigned. The Program Instructors will ensure program materials and supplies are maintained, stocked and replenished as needed, and assist with daily program logistics and administration. They will also follow all health and safety legislation, regulations and policies to ensure professional and safe program delivery.
Ideal candidates must have or be working towards a bachelor’s degree in education, recreation, environmental sciences or a related field with experience supervising children and a minimum of two years of experience as an instructor, tour guide, or program facilitator. An equivalent combination of skills and experience may be considered. Experience with public speaking, coordinating group dynamics, and teaching youth, adults, and seniors is required. Knowledge of relevant health and safety legislation, standards and regulations is an asset. Experience and knowledge of camps, museums, and nature centre operations are valued assets. Candidates must demonstrate caring, creativity, enthusiasm, flexibility, patience, professionalism, leadership, and teamwork skills. Candidates must demonstrate skill in managing multiple priorities while attending to details and maintaining a safe and professional work environment. Candidates must demonstrate effective communication, interpersonal and customer service skills for maintaining respectful working relationships with fellow employees, and providing extraordinary experiences to our visitors, campers, and parents. A valid Manitoba Class 5 Driver’s License, CPR and First Aid certification are required. The ability to speak French and/or other languages is an asset. Candidates must demonstrate skills in responding to emergencies, and must be physically capable of performing the duties of the position (documentation of physical capacity may be required) and work in an outdoor environment. Successful candidates will be subject to a Criminal Record Check and Child Abuse Registry Check.
