Armagh is the only second-stage supportive housing program serving the Region of Peel. We offer a safe and supportive environment for women, with or without children.

Transitional Housing Support Worker – Full time, Four (4) Month Contract

Purpose of the Position:

Under the supervision of the Executive Director, the Transitional Housing Support Worker is responsible for providing assistance to women and their children as they work toward independence and freedom from abuse. The Transitional Housing Support Worker is responsible for a wide range of services that address the issue of woman abuse.Key areas of responsibilities include development of transitional support plans, safety plans, community resourcing, find and maintain housing.

Summary of Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Works with women to develop and implement transition plans sensitive to their needs

  • Assists women with housing applications
  • Assists women to develop short and long term goals
  • Provides crisis and short-term supportive counselling (in residence and another year follow-up)
  • Conducts intake and discharge interviews with all clients
  • Maintains accurate referral records and security of client files
  • Ensures intake, discharge and all other appropriate information is complete
  • Assists women to understand the cycle of abuse and the effects on themselves and their children
  • Assists women in developing safety strategies or safety plans for themselves and their children
  • Assists women with budgeting and securing financial assistance
  • Works with women on their legal issues
  • Conducts monthly resident meetings
  • Co-facilitation of support groups and assists with program development
  • Ensures ongoing program evaluations are completed
  • Accompany women to appointments when necessary
  • Identifies geographically based referral bases, develops referring relationships
  • Monitors and provides feedback to women regarding connections with other referrals
  • Assists women in advocating for themselves
  • Maintains confidential, accurate and non-judgemental documentation
  • Maintains client case files, data management; entering information into program data base (WISH)
  • Uses mediation and supportive counselling to resolve client conflicts and complaints as they relate to community living
  • Ensures that emergency and crisis situations are approached with clear and swift decisions
  • Adhere to the Child Protection Act in particular in regards to the section on “Duty to Report”
  • Share on-call responsibilities with the Executive Director
  • Participation on committees as required
  • Assists with rent calculation and updates Executive Director of any outstanding rent payments
  • Complete unit inspections with the Administrative Property Assistant and communicates any concerns
  • Keep up to date with promising practices related to issues that impact clients such as homelessness, addiction, domestic violence, and mental health
  • Assist and support placement students and program volunteers as required
  • Other duties or responsibilities as negotiated and assigned

Qualifications:

  • University or college degree in the human services field

  • 1-2 years’ relevant work experience working with abused women
  • Experience in working and serving a diverse community
  • Sound knowledge of issues pertaining to woman abuse, post-traumatic stress, the legal justice system and the social services network within the Region of Peel
  • Excellent interpersonal communication and organizational skills (verbal and written)
  • Proven ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Computer literate and database experience (Microsoft Office)
  • Ability to deal effectively with job related stress and handle crisis situations

  • Possess maturity and ability to work with minimal supervision
  • An awareness of the safety needs of the organization and confidentiality of the clients and agency
  • Proficiency in a second language relevant to the demographics of Peel Region is an asset
  • Current C.P.R. and First Aid training an asset
  • Current Criminal Check for Vulnerable Sector & Valid Driver’s License and use of a reliable vehicle are required
