Job purpose

Alcove’s mission is to operate residential recovery facilities for women who experience the co-occurring issues of addiction, mental health distress and a history of abuse. The Addiction Support Worker’s role is responsible to support the implementation and monitoring of the individualized treatment plans developed for each Alcove client in order to promote healing, facilitate personal growth, and ultimately guide the clients as they successfully transition into a productive and positive life within the community.

Duties and responsibilities

The Addictions Support Worker performs a wide range of duties including but not limited to the following:

Client Focus:

  • Provide support to, and interact positively with clients
  • Participate in group program delivery, as required, to assist clients in dealing with abuse, addiction, and mental health distress and support their recovery
  • Monitor, evaluate, record during each shift, client progress regarding treatment goals, and communicate same with other members of treatment team
  • Monitor closely and observe clients self-administering all medications following organizational procedures, ensuring that all documentation is completed as required
  • Collect urine samples to determine whether a patient is drug-free (drug and alcohol tests) and ensure documentation is completed as required
  • Refer patient, client, or family to community resources for housing or treatment to assist in recovery from mental or physical illness, following through to ensure service efficacy
  • Support family members to assist them in understanding, dealing with and supporting the client
  • Work with the clients in developing and achieving their aftercare plan Support assessment, intake and orientation into the facility

Program delivery:

  • Ensure that program activities are effectively and efficiently delivered in accordance with the mission and the goals of the organization
  • Coordinate the delivery of services among different program activities
  • Operate program activities within the policies, procedures, rules and regulations of the organization
  • Organize and participate in recreational and leisure activities * Assure the health and safety of all clients at all times, including enforcing house rules
  • Conduct random room searches
  • Closely monitor and supervise client activities
  • Account for all clients at strategic times such as curfew, bed checks, meal hours and fire drills
  • Intervene in client interactions to deescalate conflict and promote positive relations * Actively communicate with all members of the treatment team for effective service and risk management
  • Ensure that all forms and records established to document program activities are completed thoroughly and in a timely manner
  • Participate actively in all required shift change activities * Implement a consistent structure of daily activities including chores, meditation time, house meetings and bedtime
  • Ensure that long-term goals and objectives set to achieve the successful outcome of the program are met
  • Participate in the development of new initiatives and evaluation initiatives to support the strategic direction of the organization and maintain or improve quality

Carry out any other reasonable duties as appropriate to this position

Qualifications (Education/certification/previous experience)


  • Diploma in Social Work, Psychology or other related human services field
  • Current or eligible for CACCF certification
  • Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (ASIST)
  • CPR/ First Aid

Knowledge, skills and abilities:

  • Knowledge of client groups and/or issues related to the program area
  • Addiction, Abuse and Mental health * Knowledge and understanding of all pertinent legislation and policies including the Mental Health Act, the Child and Family Service Act, the Adoption Act, the Young Offender’s Act, the Federal and Territorial Criminal Code and all other relevant legislation and acts
  • Knowledge in the areas of needs and risk assessment, family dynamics, the impact of trauma, psycho-social functioning theories and practices and child protection theories, models and practices
  • Excellent knowledge of community resources
  • Understanding of crisis management and ability to de-escalate potentially violent situations
  • Non-violent crisis intervention an asset
  • Basic to intermediate knowledge of various medical terms and procedures
  • Ability to handle stressful and people sensitive situations
  • Ability to establish and maintain collaborative and effective working relationships
  • Demonstrates analytical and critical thinking abilities with pro-active decision-making
  • Developed negotiation and conflict resolution skills
  • Flexible, adaptable and able to work effectively in a variety of settings and in a cross-cultural situations
  • Excellent verbal and written communications skills in English

Proficiency in the use of computers for:

  • Word processing, Databases, Spreadsheets, E-mail, Internet and Fax


  • 1-3 years in related field

Work schedule:

Alcove is seeking to fill two full-time permanent positions, Monday to Friday, 40 hours per week.

In addition, Alcove is seeking to fill two part-time permanent positions, Saturday, Sunday and statutory holidays, 8 hour shifts each.

Alcove facility operates 24 hours and Support Workers may be required to rotate between day and evening shifts.

Day shift – 7:00 am to 3:00 pm

Evening shift – 3 pm to 11 pm
