The Alberta SPCA is seeking an individual with a genuine concern for animal welfare, experienced in providing clear, consistent written and oral communications. Reporting to the Executive Director, the successful candidate will have excellent verbal and written communication skills, political sensitivity, ability to think strategically and demonstrated people skills that promote a collaborative approach and a culture of respect.

The Communication Manager will be responsible for:

  • Creating and executing an internal and external communications strategy.
  • Researching, writing, and editing content for a variety of print and digital materials. Ensures messaging is clear, accurate and consistent with the Alberta SPCA’s vision and mission.
  • Ensuring consistency of content and messaging between web, print, and other media forms.
  • Supporting the planning, gathering, editing, publishing website content ensuring consistency of creative, navigation and usability.
  • Monitoring and responding to the day-to-day social media activities.
  • Assessing and responding to media inquiries and preparing key messages.
  • Where appropriate, providing creative direction for print and online materials in support of the Alberta SPCA’s initiatives. Liaises with vendors throughout the production process (e.g., printers, supply houses and external designers) when required.

Skills and Experience:

  • Demonstrated superior writing, editing and copywriting skills
  • Professional communications, public relations or marketing experience
  • Ability to balance priorities and multiple projects
  • Ability to effectively communicate with media, members, peers, and stakeholders
  • Excellent attention to detail
  • A willingness to learn
  • Ability to work effectively and collaboratively with a team, as well as independently with minimal supervision
  • Understanding of and expertise in developing various communication tools (i.e. web, ads, newsletters, special events, brochures, videos, etc.)


  • Post-secondary degree or diploma in communications, journalism, public relations or marketing, supplemented by a minimum of 3 years of related work experience.
  • Experience in a not-for-profit environment considered an asset.
