AMVIC is a not-for-profit organization that exercises delegated powers and duties to regulate the automotive industry in Alberta. AMVIC works daily to uphold industry standards, educate licensees and protect automotive consumers on behalf of all Albertans. AMVIC provides a range of services to achieve its mandate, including licensing automotive businesses, registering automotive salespeople, educating consumers, and ensuring compliance with the Fair Trading Act, its related Regulations, the Traffic Safety Act and sections of the Criminal Code .

The Alberta Motor Vehicle Industry Council (“AMVIC”) has an immediate opening for a self-motivated individual who enjoys working in a fast paced environment to fill the position of Advertising Compliance (Industry Standards Officer – Advertising & Special Projects), based in our Edmonton office.

The Advertising Compliance (Industry Standards Officer – Advertising & Special Projects) role actively supports AMVIC’s mandate and vision as a front line ambassador providing support to Investigators and Compliance Officers and other AMVIC staff throughout the province. The successful candidate monitors industry advertising including print, online, radio and TV. This position will make direct contact with industry to identify non-compliance issues in advertising and promote compliance. The successful candidate will work as part of an integrated team to ensure consumer protection in motor vehicle sales transactions in the province. Using a high degree of initiative and professionalism. This position may also participate in special projects from time-to-time.

This position will report to the Manager of Industry Standards.

Responsibilities and Duties

  • Regulatory compliance, automotive dealership experience, advertising experience. Familiarity with the automotive environment would be an asset.
  • Ability to work independently as well as a member of a team, self-motivated.
  • Excellent analytical organizational, conflict resolution, written and oral communication skills.
  • Review all advertising both print, media and on-line for violations of legislation and/or misleading advertising practices.
  • Ability to communicate legislation, educate and promote best practices to stakeholders in a clear and concise manner including by not limited to: in person, telephone, written and webinars.
  • Identify and make recommendations to remedy problematic trends.
  • Respond to a variety of complex inquiries to acceptable advertising standards that align with legislation.
  • Sound knowledge of FTA and regulations is desirable. Ability to interpret FTA and regulations.
  • Participate in enforcement actions when appropriate.
  • Previous experience with public engagement sessions as a presenter and facilitator.
  • Provide advice within area of expertise to other AMVIC staff.
  • Provide vision and guidance to the growth and success of the Industry Standards program.
  • Maintain awareness of changes to legislation.
  • Successfully complete a criminal record check.
  • Other duties as assigned.

  • Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office software products.
  • Knowledge of advertising and the use of the internet
  • Relevant legislation in particular Alberta’s Fair Trading Act and Regulations , the Freedom of Information and Privacy Protection Act


  • High School Diploma
  • Post-secondary education (Marketing, Business or related field)
  • At least 4 years of related administrative work experience
  • Investigation or compliance experience in a Regulatory environment will be considered an asset. Equivalencies will be considered.
  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.
  • On occasion, weekend work may be requested.
