The isotope lab provides analytical support for applied water resources research projects conducted by the Water Management Team as well as other teams within the Ecosystems and Plant Sciences Group, and external clients. This positon will assist with preparation and precision weighing of wood fibre samples for isotopic analysis. The samples require precision weighing and preparation, which includes sealing pre-ground wood fibre in metal capsules, as well as tracking, chain of custody, and data reporting for each sample. Time will be devoted to basic laboratory support activities including: bottle washing, general cleaning, preparation of samples for water and gas analysis, filtering, shipping and receiving. The Laboratory Assistant will also have the opportunity to learn basic theory, procedures, and applications of isotope ratio mass spectrometry in environmental research.
Candidates should have completed or be working towards a university undergraduate degree with interest in in the physical sciences, chemistry, or geosciences, preferably with experience working in a laboratory setting. Familiarity with chemical laboratory equipment and knowledge of test methods would be an asset. Candidates are expected to have strong communication skills and be able to work effectively in a team environment.
