Alberta’s Tomorrow Project is a large, long-term study, which aims to find out more about what causes diseases such as cancer, heart disease and other long-term health conditions. The mission of Alberta’s Tomorrow Project is to provide a high quality infrastructure platform, based on a prospective population-based cohort design that supports innovative and inter-disciplinary research to advance cancer control and the study of etiology of chronic disease. Alberta’s Tomorrow Project has been operating since 2001, and joined with other provinces in 2008 to form the Canadian Partnership for Tomorrow Project. This pan-Canadian study will follow the health of a large number of people in British Columbia, Alberta, Ontario, Quebec, and Atlantic Canada for the next 20-50 years.

The main responsibility of the Research Database Specialist position is to manage the reporting, security and integrity of the large volume of data collected by Alberta’s Tomorrow Project.

Duties and Responsibilities:
– Conduct descriptive statistical analysis using T-SQL and SAS/R to produce tables, graphs and figures as needed for use in presentations, reports, grant proposals and scientific papers.
– Perform custom GIS analysis data using ArcGIS software.
– Provide basic tech support and manage communication between Albert Health Services IT help desk and Alberta’s Tomorrow Project staff.
– Perform data links with administrative databases such as Alberta Cancer Registry, Alberta Health.
– Develop and execute data cleaning/validation scripts in SAS/R/T-SQL for surveys delivered to study participants.
– Develop and execute regular audits to ensure the security, quality and integrity of participant registration and research databases, and maintain back-ups of all databases.
– Prepare custom SQL Server scripts for maintenance of databases, continually updating detailed documentation of SQL Server where necessary, including database entities, relationships and definitions.
– Maintain and update detailed data dictionaries for research databases.
– Coordinate ongoing and future development of databases either internally or in conjunction with external consultants. This includes developing RFP documents, interviewing potential consultants, and subsequently acting as the main point of contact.
– Train research study staff and other relevant individuals in the use of new or updated databases.
– Prepare regular standard reports from databases to monitor study response rates and to assist with inventory management.
– Use standard statistical methods to clean, organize and prepare raw data from the research databases for analysis using various software programs, primarily SAS. Maintains detailed documentation of data requests and methods used to clean and extract data.

Qualifications:

– BA or BSc degree in related field, diploma in computer technology/GIS technology or BSc in computer science required.
– A minimum three to five years with demonstrated experience in understanding and developing solutions from the conceptual stage through to implementation.
– Substantial experience with and demonstrated knowledge of one of the department’s relational database management systems (Microsoft SQL Server or MySQL).
– Experience with and knowledge of statistical packages used within the department (SAS/R) is an asset.
