The Molecular Diagnostics specialization, of Genetic Laboratory Services provides molecular testing for various genetic conditions, serving an important role in the provision of genetic services in Alberta. Lab Scientist I position will serve Genetic Lab Services in capacity of providing molecular testing.

Lab Scientist I – Genetic Lab services – Molecular Diagnostic Specialization:

– Patient sample preparation, analytical testing, and result generation.
– Responsible for Molecular biology techniques such as DNA and RNA extraction, PCR, genotyping, and sequencing.
– Evaluates and troubleshoots procedures for various assays.
– Performs routine testing.
– Collates and analyzes data.
– Compiles results for interpretation.
– Implements new test methods.
– Establishes and Maintains quality and safety control standards.
– Complies with all safety requirements and quality practices.
– Revises test procedure documentation when required.
– Participates in quality assurance monitoring, testing, and improvement.
– Participates in continual learning through group and self-learning initiatives.
– Maintains and troubleshoots equipment.
– Assist in implementing new equipment.
– Accession and prepare patient samples for testing.
– Other duties and responsibilities as required.


– Bachelors Degree in Sciences, Molecular Biology, Genetics plus Diploma in Clinical Genetics Program (through a BCIT or Michener program) is required.
– Current registration with the College of Medical Laboratory Technologists of Alberta (CMLTA) is required.
– CSMLS is an asset. Equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.

Experience, Skills, and Abilities:
– Minimum one year of practical molecular diagnostic and genetics experience required.
– Experience with clinical setting and patient testing is required.
– Conversant with the operations of a clinical genetics service laboratory with specialist knowledge in molecular techniques is required.
– Experience with Access database is an asset.
– Skilled at information technology for use in accessioning samples, reporting patient data, and tracking laboratory statistics.
– Capable of working under pressure with frequent interruptions.
– Possess good organizational and analytical skills.
– Demonstrates initiative and good judgment.
– Capable of working independently with efficient time management.
– Able to work under stress and to meet exacting deadlines.
