Reporting to the Operations Supervisor, the Emergency Medical Technologist – Paramedic is responsible for following organizational direction and meeting established expectations when performing required operational duties. Also responsible for assessment, treatment and transport of ill or injured patients at the Advanced Life Support level. This will be accomplished through effective communication, initiative and insight, sound technical and professional knowledge, and promotion of best practices for both internal and external clients.

Organizational responsibility:
– Understanding and complying with AHS EMS policies, procedures, protocols, job descriptions, and organizational directives.
– Understanding and complying with Ambulance Services Act, Health Professions Act, Alberta College of Paramedics regulations and associated legislation.
– Understanding organizational expectations and seeking clarification when expectations are not clear.
– Understanding AHS EMS role and organizational requirements/expectations as a regional service and displaying compliance to these requirements/expectations.
– Aiding in facilitation of organizational improvements, enhancing patient care and efficient delivery of external client services.
– Remaining aware of quality assurance standards and monitoring performance of self to these standards.
– Participating in committee work as required, goal setting, and performance appraisals.

Patient care and operational duties:
– Practicing and promoting the provision of patient care and development of ‘best practice’ standards of patient care in the pre-hospital, inter-hospital, and intra-hospital environment.
– Participating in the development and promotion of clinical ‘best practice’ standards of care for the pre-hospital, inter-hospital, and intra-hospital environment.
– Promoting the provision of ‘best practice’ standards as related to operational requirements and duties.
– Operating all vehicles in a safe and professional manner with respect to environmental conditions, vehicle abilities, driver abilities, organizational expectations (policies, procedures, and directives), and required regulations as per the Highway Traffic and Safety Act.
– Responding as dispatched in accordance with established operational directives and performance standards.
– Providing scene assessment, patient assessment, patient treatment, and patient transport at the Advanced Life Support level in accordance with the – Health – Disciplines Act, Ambulance Services Act, Ambulance Services Act, Medical Director approved protocols, and organizational direction, in the pre-hospital, inter-hospital, and intra-hospital environment as related to ground and air responses.
– Participating in the provision of Basic and Advanced Life Support levels of care when working with recognized and approved EMR/BLS/ALS partners.
– Working professionally and harmoniously with allied agencies in the provision of patient care prospectively, reactively, and retrospectively.
– Participating in Quality Improvement activities as required.
– Seeking guidance from supervisor or peers when necessary.
– Assembling, restocking, cleaning and maintaining units, patient care equipment, and facility.

In addition to a competitive rate of pay, AHS currently has a Remote Retention Allowance in place to an annual maximum of $3,000. This allowance is non-pensionable and is payable on an hourly basis for all hours paid at the basic rate of pay.


– Permanent Alberta licensure as a Registered Emergency Medical Technologist – Paramedic (EMT-P).
– Candidates must possess a valid class 4 Alberta Operators License or equivalent with no more than six (6) demerits.
– A driver’s abstract must be submitted at time of application, dated no more than 30 days from date of application.
– Current Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification.
– Current certification in Basic Trauma Life Support (BTLS), or equivalent.
– Current certification in Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS-HCP).
– Current 12-2 certifications, as required.
– Automatic External Defibrillation Course preferred.
– Current National Academy for Professional Driving (NAPD) certification preferred.
– Knowledge of Ambulance Services Act, Health Professions Act, and associated regulations and legislation.
– Knowledge of occupational health and safety standards and application of such.
