The position provides leadership in planning, co-ordination, implementation and evaluation of educational activities for Respiratory Therapy staff, including orientation, compulsory educational programs, clinical development, certifications and continuing education. The specific focus of the role is dependent on the educational needs and practice requirements of Respiratory Therapy in the Alberta Children’s Hospital in collaboration with the other Calgary zone centers in relation to neonatal care.

The RTCI is responsible for delivery of programs based on identified needs which includes legislation, continuing competencies and certifications, quality improvement initiatives, strategic plans and objectives and organizational needs. The RTCI participates in the development and ongoing maintenance of educational programs and clinical policies and procedures. Provides input to Management regarding staff competency evaluation and performance development.

Qualifications:

  • Graduate of a recognized (CoRTE or CoARC) school of Respiratory Therapy.
  • Baccalaureate in Respiratory Therapy or equivalent health related degree an asset.
  • Current registration in the College and Association of Respiratory Therapists of Alberta required.
  • Current membership in the Canadian Society of Respiratory Therapists and asset.
  • BCLS-HCP certification required.
  • BCLS-HCP Instructor credentials an asset.
  • Instructor of advanced life support program an asset – ie PALS, NRP, etc.
  • Recent experience in Neonatal Critical Care (Level III NICU) required.
  • NRP certification an asset.
  • PALS certification an asset.
  • Recent neonatal resuscitation room experience preferred.
  • High Risk Neonatal Transport experience an asset.
  • Neonatal intubation certification an asset.
  • Minimum 5 years RRT experience in a variety of clinical areas required.
  • Recent intensive experience in pediatric critical care an asset.
  • Recent intensive experience in pediatric respiratory therapy an asset.
  • Experience in educational program design, delivery and measurement of learning outcomes preferred.

Demonstrated expertise in:

  • Application of adult teaching – learning principles.
  • Use of respiratory therapy processes i.e. assessment, planning, intervention, evaluation.
  • Communication and collaboration skills with other health professionals.
  • Leadership skills.
  • Ability to promote the change process.
  • Application and promotion of problem solving and creative thinking.
  • Ability to critique development of staff and provide meaningful feedback.
  • Prioritizing and meeting competing demands/requirements of setting.
  • Strong computer skills.
