As a member of the Southern Alberta Renal Program (SARP), the technical writer operates independently and in a team environment under the general supervision of the manager, applying communications expertise to the research, writing, design and production of user documentation and computer training modules for software applications, clinical processes, and other business needs. In addition, the technical writer provides general communications support and assists with related tasks in a technology-driven team environment, and plays an important role in helping to meet client needs throughout the department.
Major accountabilities and responsibilities include:
- Applying communications knowledge and experience to document technical processes and procedures in a manner intended to be easily understood by a variety of non-technical staff, including clinical and executive levels
- Utilizing instructional and technical expertise to design and develop, or to oversee the design and development of, comprehensive computer-based learning modules for staff training needs within the department
- Providing general communications support in a variety of roles to draft, revise, proofread, and offer advice on a range of team and department documents or presentations
- Assisting in the creation and storage of internal process documents
- Involving judgment as a team member to contribute to project design and implementation in multiple areas including readability, graphic design and quality assurance testing
- Other communications-related duties and additional tasks as required
Qualifications:
- Degree, diploma, certificate or equivalent experience in Communications, Journalism, Technical Writing or a related field
- Minimum three years of experience and a high degree of familiarity working with Microsoft Office applications
- Experience with graphic design, document design, Adobe Acrobat and Adobe Captivate or related instructional design software an asset
- Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to communicate effectively with all levels of a large, multi-disciplinary department
- The ability to quickly grasp new concepts and present them with accuracy and clarity to a variety of intended audiences
- Experience in a health care setting an asset
- The ability to work both independently and in support of project teams
- Organized and capable of producing quality results within defined time limits
- Self-directed and highly motivated
- The ability to develop new skills and to enhance current knowledge as required
